After completing the build on my Churchill and Panther tank and builing a large batch of walls, what better excuse for a quick diorama to show them off.

The diorama is based on a real event that took place in the village of Tilly-Sur-Seulles on the 18/19th June 1944. The 2nd Essex Regiment were assualting the village with support from the 81st Assault Squadron RE. The Churchill AVRE unexpectedly came upon a chance encounter with a Panther tank and fired a snap shot at it unfortunetly missing, but striking a near by telegraph pole or tree and thus destroying the Panther tank.

The diorama wall was simply made from foam card and the tree behind the wall is scratch built from wire. I used a simple photograph as a backdrop. The black and white photograph is actually a real shot taken in Tilly after the battle.

Although not easy to see, the dust behind the Churchill tank is made from Poly Fill which was sprayed cream and then had the dust/dirt from the road glued onto it.

Both tanks and figures are 1/56 scale made for Bolt Action gaming.

Tamiya 1/35 Abrams tank.

Never built a 1/35 kit before and this one was built with my 13 year old son so double the fun.

He built the kit and I helped him with the airbrushing which is pretty steep curve for anybody let alone a 13yr old. He then took on the weathering using the hairspray technique and did a really good job.

He then made the wall for the diorama from foam card and added the Iraqi graffiti(translates as “Leave”). The base of the diorama was finished with a sand and rocks all glued into place.

We added a random Iraqi backdrop to the final shot for a bit of fun.

On a final note the Tamiya kit was really easy to build and lot more simple than a lot of 1/75 kits that some people might think would be an easier starting point for the young model maker. We cannot wait to do the next 1/35 kit which is going to be a Tiger.

A bit more armour for the allies. An M10 Wolverine tank

destroyer by Warlord games in 1/56 scale. Marked out in

British colours of the 20th Anti-Tank Regiment with men from

3rd Infantry Division. The original picture the mini diorama is

based on is a short distance from Sword Beach on the 6th

of June 1944.

The raised railway line is simple 28mm resin and the embankment

is styrene. The road is real earth.

Lords of Midnight

For while now I have been wanting to recreate a favourite 80`s

computer game called The Lords of Midnight into table top

wargaming and I fortunately stumbled into Para Bellum`s

Conquest game which seems to fit perfectly with my vision.

For those of you who are too young to remember the 80`s or just

missed this game it focussed on a land locked ice kingdom with

the good fighting the bad in a Lord of the Rings type environment

and more.

Para Bellum`s new conquest figures which are roughly 36mm are enough

of a match and ideal for conversion to get me started.

The soldier in the picture comes from the Men at arms figure set

and will represent a Lord of Midnight. Hope the frozen atmosphere

of the landscape comes across ?

This is my finished diorama.

First up are the pictures with a backdrop.

Next come the pictures without a backdrop.

Loads of fun making it and lots of room for improvement.

I have decided to give the Warlord games, “Summer Offensive Painting
Competition” a go under the diorama section. I am going with Bolt
Action and basing the diorama on the picture below. After
that I am taking artistic licence.

Early days so far on my Stug III but lots more to come.

Highlights of the year personally for me was getting those

Normandy terrain boards finally finished and really getting

my skills up to scratch on painting buildings. If I had to

choose just one thing from the whole year as my all time

favourite, it would be the Infinity Ice Diorama

picture which was so much fun to do.

Happy Christmas to everybody and may your New Year have

less models to paint than what I have planned.

Oh finally aims for next year ? Well I aim to do a lot

more dioramas and I must get that Infinity terrain finished.

I recently put myself down for a diorama challenge on

the official Infinity forum with the theme being ice and

snow. This is what I came up with.

It was my first play around with snow and ice type products

and I am very pleased with the outcome.

Basically its a 1 x 1 foot board with styrene used to

create the ice shapes. To create the snow and ice I used Soft

Flake Snow from Woodland Scenics and the ice is WS Water

Effects. I added a few bits of left over parts to create the

small jetty at the bottom right and a scratch built power source

for the radar. The radar is a £3.99 ebay special.

The Panoceania Fusilier has been slightly converted so

he is holding a range finder and I scratch built some skis

and sticks to give the impression he is on patrol.

The hardest bit for me was trying to blend the diorama into

the photographic backdrop and make it look seemless.

I will take some more pictures shortly to show more of the base

and a close up of the Fusilier.
