Step back in time to year 1984 and a computer game called,”The Lords of Midnight” was released on the ZX Spectrum written by Mike Singleton. The game is an epic fantasy wargame set in a frozen world, with the forces of good verus the forces of evil.

You start the game with our hero,”Luxor the Moonprince”,”Morkin the Free”,”Rorthron the Wise” and “Corleth of the Fey”. With these four followers you need to raise an army and defeat the forces of the witchking. The game itself was groundbreaking using a 3D landscaping effect for the first time and allowing a huge gaming area to be played on. The game would see another successful follow up in the title,”Doomdarks Revenge” and a 3rd instalment was planed but sadly never completed. Fast forward to today a writer called Drew Wagar has brought the game to life again in a series of books based on the Midnight world which are excellent. You can also still play the game for free on platforms like GOG.

One of my all time favourite plans was to wargame this scenario on a board and to be honest I have been thinking about it for the best part of five years. Its taken me that long to focus my ideas and actually create two seperate board games. The first will be 28mm figures fighting on battle boards similar to Warhammer Fantasy and the second will be 6mm armies allowing a greater scope of map.

If you take a look at some of the original screenshots from the game you can see a number of things. The figures are all semi familiar(the game has serious echoes of the Lord of the Rings),dwarfs, giants, dragons, trolls, wolves and mounted riders straight of of Rohan so plenty of figures on the market to adapt or reuse to my purpose. I decided to take characters from both games and also try and copy some of the landscape. I also decided to use some artistic licence with some characters as the 1984 block figures(see below) and colours leave something to be desired.

So my plan begins with creating individual figures for each race and some terrain to get the ball rolling so to speak.

Basic terrain using a board with caulking Woodland Scenics snow flake on it and some foam carved mountains in the backgroud. Blue trees as well as per the game.

The bottom photo is the first attempt at a 6mm army with scratch built movement marker coming up behind.

“A Gorgon Terminator Squad was an elite unit formation comprised of Terminator Armoured Veteran Legionaries of the Iron Hands Legion during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy eras. These elite squads wore the experimental Gorgon Pattern Terminator Armour prototype, which required the wearer to undergo a painful bonding process as well as extensive cybernetic enhancement.
One of the most extreme technological examples of the Iron Hands’ innovation to improve on the designs in this regard was the hazardous but powerful “Gorgon” prototype, a variant of Indomitus Pattern Terminator Armour. This advanced prototype suit was just going into production at the outset of the Horus Heresy to supplement the Iron Hands Legion’s combat-depleted stocks of Terminator Armour.
The design replaced the energy field generators imbedded in the armour with experimental systems that converted incoming electromagnetic and kinetic energy into a burst of blinding light, able to incapacitate and maim nearby foes. The heat and electrochemical toxin bleed from the armour’s systems limited the armour’s agility, and its negative side effects required a high level of cybernetic augmentation for its wearer to endure.”

I got lucky and found a squad going cheap on fleabay for £40 including postage. So armed with the above description and a firm belief that Gorgon Terminators should be green and not black in colour I got painting and kit bashing at the same time.

My colour scheme is basically silver base coat, gold blended into the silver and then Druchi Violet, followed by Ork Flesh green . Everything was air brushed. The bases are by Fenrisgames.

All the arms have been magnetised so you can choose load outs which is especially handy for Space Hulk missions which these models are designed for.

If your an avid wargamer and you like building terrain, then this

is the book for you. I bought Volume 1(Winter Wargaming) about two years ago and loved the

book so this latest book(Volume 2 Mediterranean Wargaming) was a must buy and Im not disappointed.

The book is a detailed guide to the work of Pat Smith and all the work he has completed over

the years. To cut a long story short a number of years ago Pat decided to collate all his

fantastic work on the wargamingwithsilverwhistle.blogspot.com and put it into a book. Volume 1

was so successful he decided to do another and thus my blog post.

Ok, so what exactly do get for your £20 of money ? You get a 148 page book of glossy pictures

to drool over and in depth step by step guides to building and painting terrain. There is also

information on painting figures and vehicles.

The exact contents includes the chapters:

  •  Introduction.
  •  Materials.
  •  Terrain mat and flexible roads.
  •  Mountain terrain.
  •  Bridges.
  •  Buildings.
  •  Damaged and destroyed buildings.
  •  Olive groves.
  •  Terraced hills,pillbox and blockhouse.
  •  Vineyards.
  •  Orchards and cypress trees.
  •  Terrain clutter.
  •  Figure painting.
  •  Vehicles.
  •  Guest painter- Moiterei talks Italian.
  •  The scene is set.
  •  Links.

What really sells this book is the straight forward descriptions and methods

of how the terrain is created and with such everyday tools. Nothing in this book

is unachievable to the average model maker/wargamer and is a true inspiration to

just start building and gluing.

I cannot wait for the next volume, well done.

I have always been a big fan of the Fallout video games
and was unable to resist the new board game from Fantasy
Flight Games. It seems Fallout is very popular at the moment
with the release of Fallout 76 and another board game called
Fallout Wasteland Warfare by Modiphius.

Anyway leaving the game itself to one side which I will review
in another post I wanted to concentrate on the excellent figures
and my paint schemes for them.

The board game comes with five figures. You get a Brotherhood

Of Steel in Power Armour, a ghoul in a suit with a plasma pistol

, a Super Mutant with Power Hammer, a female waste lander with 3

barrel gun and finally a Vault Dweller in jumpsuit with a rifle.

I have based all five on screen captures from Fallout 3 and 4 and

gone for the toxic, radiated, wasteland look on the bases.

Hope you like them and I really enjoined painting them. Makes a change

from WWII all the time.

Had the pleasure of painting a single 28mm figure from

the Stoessi`s Heroes range the other day and I have to say

what a fantastic high quality figure you get for your money.

The character in the pictures is Canadian Highlander Sergeant

Harold, a scout and sniper.

If you want an extra special figure to add to your Bolt Action

army then this is the place to come.

What’s more there are some excellent step by step articles

on the web site showing how to paint your figures and a

brief background to each individual character which is

a really nice touch.

Its been a while ,but finally the tanks are rolling out across my battle board again. The dust is being blown off the paint pots and the brushes are being nursed back to life.

Anyway just a quick picture update on what is on the painting table as it pours down with freezing rain outside.

First up as you can see a friend has got me painting his tanks from the Gale Force 9 board game.

tankart-1-3rd-ed-

I have been after this book for a while and
finally managed to win an ebay auction at a
reasonable price(£30). Its sounds expensive but
its out of print and highly sort after by the modelling
community.

For your money you get 288 pages of mouth watering, glossy
pages. The first 34 pages are broken up into describing in
simple detail the techniques used in the book and it is all
supported with easy guide pictures and steps.

The remainder of the book is divided into eight sections, each
section covering a build of a different vehicle, showing the
painting and weathering.

I have read a lot of guides and books covering afv painting and
weathering techniques but this is simply the best so far. This book
describes everything in steps and pictures where other books skip stages
or keep back vital information like it is one great secret. Plus you
don’t need to be an expert as its written and explained so well anybody
can learn from it.

My only complaint is that there is so much stuff in this book I
don’t know where to start lol.

This is a must buy for any afv modeller and there are 3 other books
available as well but sadly also out of print. The remaining books
cover allied armour as well.
Hopefully these books will be re-printed in the near future and
everybody can get their hands on a copy.

Just an update of what’s on painting board at the moment.

A change of scale for me, 1/56 scale to be exact. This is

the Warlord Games Wittman Tiger which is suitable for playing

Bolt Action. For those of you unfamiliar with Bolt Action

its scale fits in with 28mm figures and the battles are basically

skirmish games starting at platoon level.

So far all I have done is the base coat and added some highlights.

Early days yet, but a some serious camo coming shortly.

Tig3

I have had this stuff lying around the man

cave for some time now and as New Year resolution

I decided to work my way through the back log and

create some space.

First up is some simple but lovely back gardens made

by Tiger Terrain that fit nicely onto the back of

their terraced houses and shops. They would also fit

easily onto any other makers buildings as well. As

soon as I saw these gardens I had visions of ” A

Bridge To Far” and paras jumping gardens in Arnhem.

Tig3

Of a similar nature is this ruined house and

walled garden, once again by Tiger Terrain.

Plenty of room in the ruin house for troops, a pak

gun or even a tank. The walled garden just adds

a little extra dimension.

Tiger Terrain.

Just so you know, I am still madly modelling

and the work is already building up.

Some finished pieces as of late include a stack

of 15mm field gates, some grave stones and a pile

of sand bags. All made by Loic Neveu.
